Japan to Australia Shipping Process

Let’s go over our shipping process from start to finish:

  • Pick-Up or Supplier Coordination

If you’re buying on EXW (Ex Works) terms, we’ll arrange the pick-up directly from your supplier in Japan. For FOB (Free on Board) shipments, your supplier will handle packing and delivery to the port or airport, and we’ll take over from there.

  • Planning and Booking

We assess your shipment details—cargo type, size, and urgency—and choose the best option: air freight, or sea freight (FCL or LCL). Space is booked with reliable carriers, routes are scheduled, and logistics are tailored to fit your needs and budget.

  • Cargo Handling and Documentation

Your goods are securely packed and prepared for transit, meeting international shipping standards. We also manage all documentation, including bills of lading, packing lists, commercial invoices, certificates of origin (for JAEPA duty exemptions), and other required paperwork.

  • Customs Clearance and Delivery

Our in-house customs brokers handle all clearance processes, ensuring compliance with Australian Border Force regulations. Duties, GST, and biosecurity inspections are managed seamlessly to avoid delays. Once cleared, your goods are delivered to the final destination, with tracking provided throughout the journey.

Shipping Routes and Transit Times

Sea Freight

Sea freight is ideal for larger shipments, with transit times ranging from 17 to 25 days, depending on the route and transshipments. Direct routes are limited, with most vessels to Perth transhipping via Singapore or Port Kelang, and shipments to Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane routing through North Asia.

  • Tokyo to Sydney: 17 days

  • Kobe to Sydney: 19 days

  • Nagoya to Sydney: 20 days

Air Freight

Air freight offers fast delivery, typically taking 3–7 days door-to-door, making it ideal for time-sensitive or high-value goods like perishables. Express air freight, meanwhile, can deliver within 2–5 working days, providing a reliable door-to-door service for critical cargo.

MCC World International helps you choose the best shipping option, ensuring smooth transit and customs compliance.

How the Japan-Australian Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA) Benefits Your Business

The Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA), in place since 2015, has made importing from Japan more accessible and cost-effective. It’s one of Australia’s most used trade agreements, and for good reason—it’s designed to make trade between the two countries simpler and more rewarding.

Here’s what JAEPA means for your business:

  • Lower Import Costs: Many goods from Japan, like vehicles, machinery, and even agricultural products, now come with reduced or zero tariffs, helping you save money.
  • Streamlined Trade: JAEPA cuts through red tape, simplifying processes like customs clearance and documentation.
  • Flexible Trade Options: JAEPA works alongside other agreements like the CPTPP and RCEP, giving you even more ways to access Japanese goods.
  • A Natural Fit: Australia and Japan have complementary economies—what they produce matches what we need, making trade between the two incredibly efficient.

Importing from Japan has never been easier, and we’re here to make sure it stays that way for your business. Ready to make JAEPA work for you? Let’s get started.
