Thinking about importing your motorcycle to Australia? Our pre-shipping checklist is here to help you prepare, ensuring your motorcycle arrives safely and smoothly to its new home. At MCC World International, we’ve been handling motorcycle imports for years, and this guide is packed with the essentials to keep you on track.

Step 1: Determine Your Motorcycle’s Import Type

Start by confirming whether your motorcycle for importation is temporarily or permanently:

  • Temporary Import: If you’re bringing your motorcycle to Australia for a short period (up to 12 months), then this is the right import type for you. Temporary imports require a Carnet de Passage (CDP.)

Extensions are possible and must be approved before the carnet’s expiry by submitting a completed Form B257, a copy of the carnet, and a written request to the Australian Automobile Association (AAA).

  • Permanent Import: If you’re moving to Australia or want to sell your motorcycle here, then you’ll need to import it permanently. This type of import requires a Vehicle Import Permit (VIP), which can be obtained from the Department of Infrastructure.

If you’re unsure which category applies to your situation, contact our team for expert advice.

Step 2: Documentation Required

Once you’ve determined your import type, the next step is to get your documentation in order. This includes:

  • Original Purchase Invoice or Bill of Sale: If unavailable, obtain a “sight unseen” valuation from a bike dealer.
  • Vehicle Registration Documents: For countries like the USA, original ownership/title papers are required for export. Our agents will contact and instruct your seller to ensure all necessary paperwork is provided.
  • Photo ID: Provide a high-quality colour scan of your passport’s photo page or an Australian driver’s licence.
  • Proof of Ownership: Documents such as the title to confirm you own the motorcycle.
  • Relevant Permits or Approvals: Include your Carnet de Passage (CDP) or Vehicle Import Permit (VIP) as required.

Our team ensures these documents comply with Australian Customs requirements and works to use the lowest valuation to minimise your GST costs.

Step 3: Apply for a Vehicle Import Permit (VIP)

If you want your motorcycle in Australia for good, you must apply for a Vehicle Import Permit before shipping. Here are the most common VIP categories:

  • Personal Imports: Motorcycles you’ve owned and used for over 12 months.
  • Classic Vehicles: Bikes over 25 years old.

If your motorcycle doesn’t meet these criteria, don’t worry – that’s where MCC come in. We’ll help identify the appropriate category and guide you through the application process to ensure your VIP is approved on time.

Step 4: Check GST and Duties

With all your documentation and permits in place, it’s time to calculate your motorcycle’s GST and duties. These charges depend on:

  • Origin: The country from which you’re importing may influence trade agreements or exemptions.
  • Value: The Customs Value, which includes the motorcycle’s purchase price, shipping costs, and insurance.
  • Duty: 0% for motorcycles.
  • GST: 10% of the Customs Value.

If your motorcycle is returning to Australia, you can provide proof of previous Australian registration to be exempt from paying GST and duties. For accurate calculations, use our Import GST Calculator to determine the exact amount payable.

Step 5: Prepare for Quarantine

Australia biosecurity laws prohibit the import of unclean, or contaminated vehicles into the country. To ensure your motorcycle meets all biosecurity standards, make sure it’s thoroughly cleaned and free of any soil, plant material, or insects.

To make things easier, follow these guidelines:

  • Melticously clean your motorcycle until it’s showroom clean. Pay special attention to the undercarriage, tyres, and hard-to-reach areas.
  • Diassemble your bike of fairings and other parts to access hidden areas. Use tools like toothbrushes to scrub away stubborn debris.
  • If you’re shipping luggage or gear with the bike, these items must also be spotless.
  • If using timber crates, ensure they comply with ISPM15 standards (heat-treated and certified).

Vehicles upon arrival will then be inspected by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry (DAFF.). If it fails this inspection, you may need to fork out $100-$200 for a professional clean or treatment. This delay may also incur additional storage and handling fees.

Step 6: Choose Your Shipping Method

MCC World International offers three shipping methods to transport your motorcycle to Australia:

Crated Shipping

A reliable and commonly used method where your motorcycle is securely fastened inside a sturdy crate for safe transport. We can provide a customised crate for you or you can build your own. If you decide to construct your own crate, follow these requirements:

  • The motorcycle must be securely fastened inside the crate. The crate must also be fully enclosed and strong enough to handle other cargo stacked around it.
  • Crates must comply with ISPM15 standards (heat-treated and stamped timber).
  • Fuel and oil must be drained, and the battery disconnected.

Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO)

A cost-effective and faster method where the motorcycle is driven onto a vessel at the port of origin and driven off at the destination port.

Key Requirements:

    • The bike must be in running condition with no fluid leaks.
    • Fuel levels must be between 10-25%.
    • No personal items are allowed on the bike during transit.

Container Shipping

If you’re looking for extra security for your motorcycle, container shipping is an excellent choice. You can select either a 20ft or 40ft container, depending on the size of your motorcycle and any additional items you wish to ship.

This option is ideal for:

  • Shipping multiple motorcycles together.
  • Including personal belongings or other cargo alongside your bike.
  • Ensuring extra protection against environmental factors and potential damage during transit.

Container shipping provides robust security and is perfect for larger shipments or high-value bikes that require extra care.

Not sure which option works best for you? Our team can help you decide based on your bike’s condition, quantity, and your preferences.

Step 7: Marine Insurance

Shipping your motorcycle halfway across the world comes with a few risks. That’s why marine insurance is part of our quote. It’s your safety net, covering your bike against:

  • Damage: If something goes wrong during loading, unloading, or transit.
  • Loss: Protection in case your bike is stolen or lost en route.
  • Weather Events: Coverage for damages caused by storms or rough seas.

This is especially important for high-value bikes or longer shipments. With marine insurance, you can relax knowing your motorcycle is covered. For more questions about your coverage, contact our expert team.
